Opening the Door

Once again, I've gotten behind on my writing, and once again, it's because of heartache. I've finally begun to realize though, that much of my heartache is of my own making. To go into all that would be a very long story, so suffice it to say I'm aware of it...

Today, however, my cat Boo reminded me of what I've been doing and in some ways continue to do. Of what I don't want to do anymore. Whenever I have guests in the house, as I do today, I close the kitchen door so the cats can't go up front. (The cats tend to get rambunctious and I don't want them to wake people up.) But every morning, Boo sits on the table next to it and stares at the closed door. The door to the screened porch is open, and he could go outside and stare at the birds or the rabbits or just the world passing by, but he choses to sit and stare at the closed door, hoping I will open it and he'll be able to see what's on the other side. Is it something different, or just the same old thing? Ironically, although it may be different people, it's pretty much always just the same old thing.

I've been doing a guided imagery of my 'child-self' and I always see the image of that little girl, sitting and staring at the closed door. Sometimes she's crying, but she's always waiting, hoping someone will open it, hoping there will be something different on the other side. The truth is, even if someone does happen to open it, there's nothing different over there. All she's going to find is the same pain and heartache she found before. In my vision, I always lead her away from that door, to a better door, to a lovely little cottage by the sea, with a fire in the grate, cats on the sofa, and her love waiting for her to come home. That's where I want to take her, if ever she'll stop staring at the closed door and open this one that's filled with everything she wants from life.

Things have happened lately that have locked, bolted, and chained that door to the past. Some of them are things of my own making. They have been necessary; they have been hard. I am not a person who likes goodbyes, especially when they are unpleasant. Especially when chords are cut that may never be reunited. Especially when they involve people I love. But it's time to say goodbye, so I say it here. Evangeline has been fun; Electra has been necessary; but the person I have to meet now is me. She lies somewhere in the land of 'hope' and to find her, I have to open that door, and walk through. So today, that's where I'm headed...perhaps some day you'll find me there.

Dancing & Goddesses

Wow--it looks like I haven't been here for a while, but I do think Electra wrote once or twice. Last week was her kind of week--Evangeline seems more in charge of this one! Probably has a lot to do with the dancing!

Follow me here...I'm digressing a bit from my intended topic...On Monday, just when I felt like I couldn't stand another minute of being by myself, a friend I have tea with from time to time called and invited me to a late tea or an early happy hour. Since I had been just about to open a bottle and start my own, I jumped at the chance to get out. Okay, he's gay, so there is no romance going on here (unfortunately!) but we ended up spending pretty much the entire evening dancing to 80s music, me in a plaid jacket and a Fedora. I can't remember the last time I had such fun dancing--or doing anything else for that matter, but it was great!

Anyway, between that and the irony that my 'anachronist' friend recently suggested I not only try on some different personas but also that I put on a Fedora and dance--I've felt more my own person for the past couple of days. Like maybe I will find someone inside that I'd forgotten about, and maybe I'll actually like her.

Which brings me to the idea of Goddesses... I had this weird 'revelation' today, like a voice in my head that just piped up and reminded me that men are such fragile creatures but we women are Goddesses and they need us for their completion. They 'think' they need us for sex and procreation, but really, they need us so that they can connect with their spirits. Back in ancients days, when temple Goddesses held power, men went to them for just that reason. They believed the sexual union was a way of uniting with Spirit, and back then, women danced for men, rather than with them. A friend of mine was telling me recently of the idea that later, men were supposed to act as the 'frame' for women in the dance. I can't help but wonder if this was yet another way of keeping women from remembering the power they once had, not so much over men, but just in general? We certainly seem to have become 'subjugated' somewhere along the way, and truly, the idea is that we see ourselves as equals, reflections, yin-yang.

All this to say that when I danced, I remembered who I was before I gave my power away to a man. I never meant to give it up, in fact I don't think I even realized that I had, but now, I can see quite clearly that I did just that in order to be loved and accepted. I tried to be what hewanted rather than who I really was. I sold out. But at least I have a chance to find 'me' again, to re-learn the dance, to hold tight to who I am this time, and be a Goddess.

Tossing It Up

I couldn't decide who should get this post--Electra or Evangeline... I finally decided to give the toss to Electra, because she still has things she wants to say, and I don't think it's a good idea to 'silence' anyone completely! I don't really think of Electra as a victim, but she certainly can get herself into a rut and stay there for a good amount of time. I'm not sure if I'm in a rut at the moment or not. This past weekend I felt sad--he had gone off to see the new grandson and the family, and they live near the place we spent part of our honeymoon, and also a beautiful restaurant where he'd promised to take me someday for a special dinner. Now that day will probably never come...I say probably because if I said 'never' then Byron Katie would say 'is that true?' and 'how can you know that's true?' So I'll say 'probably' even though I know 'never is more likely.

Then he comes back, and barely says a word to me--why should he...we're not 'connected' anymore--and then I'm working my butt off all week to get ready for Alumni Weekend. I'm giving up MY room because HE double-booked. He 'emails' wanting to know if I 'need' anything and I'm working and crying and 'hell yes' I need a lot but nothing he's willing to give. The truth of the matter is there are a million things he could/should be doing down here but heaven forbid he should take the initiative unless 'mother' requests it of him. And I'll be DAMNED if I am going to keep on being 'mother.' He can go put his new 'love' in that role and just stay the hell out of my life!

Yes, I am upset. Yes, I am disappointed. Yes, right now I hate him. Yes, I'd like to ruin his life. Yes, I am so very angry. I'm angry about a LOT of things. I'm angry that he dumped all this on me and then 'pretends' to be 'Mr. Nice Guy' who's always willing to help if he's asked. I'm angry that he still lives up the street. I'm angry that he can't be honest with me. I'm angry that he's not who I thought he was. I'm angry that I have to stay here and deal with this house on my own. I'm angry that I'm alone. I'm angry that I didn't get either of the tourism jobs I applied for. I'm angry that I have no social life. I'm angry that I have no one to have sex with. I'm angry that the future I wanted is gone. I could go on, but the bottom line is, I'm angry, angry, angry. I guess that's better than spending the whole day crying. Luckily anger is one thing I've never held on to. So maybe I can feel it then let it go. I hope so.

Anyway, I know all this anger isn't pretty, and I'm doing my best not to shower it on anyone, including him. I'm trying to learn to respond and no react. I'm trying so hard to be a better person, a healthier person, a person who can be responsible for herself and her own emotions. I'm really trying...but it's so very hard.

I dreamed about big turtles recently and yesterday I actually saw a turtle on my walk. I looked up the symbolism, and this is what I found out--they are 'slow and steady' and they represent protection. Maybe that's what my anger is doing right now, protecting me. Also, they stand for:
  • Order
  • Creation
  • Patience
  • Strength
  • Stability
  • Longevity
  • Innocence
  • Endurance
These are good things, and it's too bad the person I loved really doesn't have any of these qualities. But I do. I hope somehow they carry me through.

Personas

A young friend of mine shared an interesting insight with me yesterday. He said that each morning, instead of asking himself what he wants to wear today, he asks, 'who do I want to be today?' Since he loves to dress in 'costume,' you might find him being a wide variety of different characters from one day to the day. I love this about him, and the fact that a grown man still has fun 'dressing up.'

But his comment got me thinking about 'ego' and the 'stories' we tell ourselves about who we are. If everything is really just a 'story' then why not change the cover of the book when you feel like it, even if you feel like changing it every single day?! Why not create a persona that fits your mood, or your plans for the day, or simply the fact that you feel like 'being' someone totally different from who you were yesterday?

I decided to give the practice a try today, and I asked myself first thing, 'who do I want to be today?' I have to admit I didn't know. Then later, when I finally got to the closet, I realized the few extra pounds I've put on meant half the clothes in my closet don't fit at the moment. So does that mean I have to be 'Miss Piggy' for the day? I hope not, because I don't have the 'pig' outfit. What I finally decided on was a 70s paisley print shirt, funky 70s earrings, and spiky hair. (I'm afraid I'd not brave enough to add the bright streaks to my hair like my friend does--however, that might make me more 'now' than 70s!) At any rate, my chosen attire certainly isn't bold enough for anyone to truly notice anything different, but at least I'm aware of taking a step back in time for a second, re-capturing for just an instant my own younger days, when paisley prints and big hoop earrings were the trend, not the retro; when going with the flow was a lot more important than going against it.

That's what I love about my young friend. He's not afraid to go against the flow and be his own person. His wife and friends are the same. I wish I'd had such courage when I was younger. I held back so much because I was afraid. I let dreams slip away because I thought I'd somehow fail. I didn't know you can't ever fail; you can only 'not do.'

So now I'm doing as much as I can. Maybe my life isn't all I'd like it to be right now, but it's the only life I have. It's happening moment to moment and I have to let it evolve on its own. Right next to my desk, on my 'vision board,' are the words 'Can you say dress up?' There's a picture of a girl on a carousel, another girl on a swing, and a Unicorn. Can you say 'fun?' Can you say 'what next?' Can you say 'who do I want to be today?' Who will I be tomorrow? I say 'let me mystery unfold.'

The Broken Glass

People often ask if you see the glass as half empty or half full, and your answer supposedly says something about whether you're an optimist or a pessimist. But what if the glass is broken?

While cleaning my kitchen today, I ran across yet another piece of the pink wine glass I threw across the room when I learned about my husband's two-year affair. I remember the exact date--January 9--so I find it somewhat remarkable that I'm still picking up significant size pieces in mid-April. Today's fragment was hiding along the baseboard behind a silk plant in a milk can--and yes, I do sweep behind things. That's what's so odd about the whole thing--I've cleaned that kitchen a million times since I broke that glass, and pieces are still turning up.

Which brings me back to the question. I've never been able to decide whether the glass is half full or half empty, but when it shatters into a million pieces, spilling wine across the floor like blood pouring from the open artery of my heart, it’s completely obvious that something valuable is broken. That's how its shattering felt—as if the person I loved and trusted most in the world had taken a knife and sliced into my primary lifeline, draining not only blood but everything that made my world important. It's pretty much felt that way ever since.

Throwing the glass didn't even begin to ease the pain. From there I went straight into a fetal position, crying, screaming, never even realizing I hadn't hung up the phone so he could hear it all. I doubt at that point I would have cared, but I might have thought, at least, that hearing that kind of anguish, he would come and check on me—especially since he only lived three blocks away. Instead he called my friend and sent her. Would I still be here if he hadn't? Who knows, with all that broken glass lying around? At any rate, she did come and by the time she got there the second phase of shock had set in. My nausea and I just wanted to be alone in the bathroom. She understood, and I must have seemed coherent enough to be left alone, because she went and promised to call me later.

What happened next wasn't pretty, but I'm going to write it down because it's real. I've never had much success with throwing up, so that night I mostly just heaved nothing—but when I finally felt it coming, lying on my bed, I knew I'd never make it back to the bathroom. So I grabbed the nearest blanket and let everything I'd been holding inside for the past two years come out. There it was--the terrible ugly truth that maybe on some level I'd suspected but would never have had the courage to look in the face. He betrayed. He lied. He cheated. Shaken to the core the shock of it all, I took my blanket and got in the shower, clothes and all, and I sat there trembling until the water began to warm me up. After, I toweled myself dry then climbed into bed and slept. What else is there to do when everything you believe in is suddenly strewn in pieces across the floor?

I'll skip the particulars of the next days and weeks and now, although I am beginning to mend. I think. It's those darn errant pieces that keep throwing me off. Every time I find one, I remember. I remember the nights we made dinner together and shared wine in that glass and its mate. I remember the long serious talks we called our 'wine conversations.' I remember sipping wine with him on our screened-in porch, our cats lazily holding court over the lush back yard that was our personal kingdom. I remember saving those glasses for us when we had guests, my way of showing our shared union. I remember opening a bottle and pouring him a glass when he walked in from work, ready to share my day and hear about his. I remember all this, and more.

There's only one glass left now, and when I drink from it, I never fail to remember how I lost the other. For some reason, maybe because the glass is so beautiful, I can't bear to throw it away. It's the palest pink with tiny flower etchings in its glass and a very light green stem. Pink and green, long my favorite colors. There's a tiny little nick on the mouth, so I have to be careful not to drink from that spot, else I cut my lip and find I can still bleed after all. Maybe I keep it to remind me that even though I'm alone, I deserve to sip my wine from a beautiful glass, even if right now it's a glass aching with memories of happier days.

The broken glass was beyond repair the minute it hit the floor. Always fragile, perhaps it would never have lasted forever. But I tried my best to care for it, keep it safe, to honor the beauty and companionship it brought into my life. Now it's gone, and there's nothing I can do to fix it, or change what’s happened, or bring it back. I’m learning a lot about what I can and cannot control. But I’m also learning something else—while I still have a glass, I must continue its safekeeping, honoring its beauty, sharing its wine and conversations—even if I do that with someone who drinks from a different kind of glass.

Sometimes my own glass is half empty, sometimes it's half full, and it's always got that little nick so it'll never be perfect. But at least for today, and hopefully tomorrow, it's not broken.

**NOTE: I let Evangeline have this one, because I thought the metaphor was so fitting. Maybe sad, but hopeful too.

I Did It!

I finished putting up new wallpaper in my bathroom today! It's not perfect, but it's my first attempt and for that, I think it's pretty darn good. I did it ALL by myself, no help from anyone. I got on the ladder and did the high spots and didn't even have to call a friend! I'm proud of my work today. Now I just have to finish getting the room cleared out and 'clean' for a guest can use it next weekend, due to a double booking for Alumni Weekend. Luckily I have my futon/TV room as a 'spare.'

One thing I learned about putting up wallpaper--it pretty much takes up all one's mental activity. I didn't have time to think about much of anything else. But I did. 'He' is on a trip this weekend to visit his son and see his new 'grandchild.' I know it's sounds crazy, because I'm not really a 'baby' person, but maybe Evangeline is. Maybe the fact that this baby is connected to 'him' actually means something. I'm not sure if it does to him or not, but it does to me. I feel like I'm a day late and a dollar short, but maybe not. Maybe I'm just accepting that I may never have a grandchild of my own, and this one would have been 'ours.' It's okay to grieve not getting to share that. Maybe it is Electra's grief, but it's mine too...I'm going to accept it, but I'm not going to live in it.

I am proud of the way I am dealing with life lately. Yes, there are still sad and lonely feelings, but I am holding them along with the good. I am taking care of 'my house.' It seems that's all I can really do right now, and I'm doing it. Like Laura Munson talks about in This is Not the Story You Think It Is, I am learning to be responsible for myself and my own happiness. Maybe I'm not particularly happy right now, but I'm handling it. Praise Be!

Waiting and Working

That seems to be the state of my life lately... At the moment, I'm waiting for guests to arrive. It may be a 'wild' weekend as I have a group of ladies here doing scrap-booking. They've booked the entire house! Money-wise, that's a good thing! In the meantime, I'm working on a couple of review projects I've picked up. Also good, money-wise...

This morning I had a group of people from Leadership Callaway here for breakfast and a tour of the house. I had most of the food ready ahead of time, so it wasn't too big of a deal, except the getting up early part. Like Electra, Evangeline doesn't like 'waking up' early! Still, that was a good thing money-wise, too, and always nice to show-off the house to people who've never been here. And I'm finally getting the hang of speaking of it as 'my' house--that's taken a while, and I still slip from time to time and say 'we,' but I do much better.

It's weird, the way I've been feeling lately. Sad, but realistic. Life has played out the way it has, and there's nothing I can do to change it. For the first time ever, I feel that perhaps I've found 'surrender/acceptance.' Truly, there's no where else to go but there. I don't particularly like this place, but I'm grateful for the 'good' parts--the house, my cats, my friends and family, Spring's arrival. I'm trying not to dwell on the rest of it. Yes, it creeps in, but Evangeline is much better at keeping it under control than Electra was. She can hold the vessel for the grief though. I know it's still there, and for now, it needs to be honored. Still, it doesn't need to rule the world.

I have a busy weekend, and I'm looking forward to the challenge of hanging new wallpaper in my bathroom. I hope I can pull that off successfully, as I have a guest using my room one night next week! I'm choosing to believe I can! I can! I can!

No Words

Is this a new place? Dare I believe I could actually be finding a different way of 'being?' I had the oddest experience this week, and I'm still afraid to believe things might really be 'changing' for me. Is this Evangeline's 'good news?' I'm hopeful...and isn't it odd for a writer to find hope in 'no words?' But that's what happened the other day. He sent me an email; I tried to respond; I couldn't find the words. So I let it go. I got another one today about a possible counseling appointment. Still no words. I deleted it. I'm not angry or feeling bad. I just don't have any more words to say to him. I've finally said them all, I think, and I don't really want to hear any more of his, either. It's an odd feeling... I'm not sure where it came from, other than I've simply been trying to keep focused on 'creating' in my own life. It seems to be working. I'm not particularly happy or sad; I'm just doing what needs to be done...

I did have something of an odd experience last night. I went to meet a male friend at a nearby winery. He's at a similar place in his own relationship, about to go through a divorce, so I've stayed in 'friendship mode,' but I enjoy our visits and discussions a lot. He's probably the only person I've met around here with whom I'm able to have the same kind of 'wine conversations' I used to have with 'him.'

But driving home, I just started sobbing, and I couldn't stop, and I felt so angry--mostly at myself--when I got home. Because I still miss my love. Yet my love wasn't ever who I thought he was... I'm lonely but I'm also afraid to get close. I don't want to let anyone in that much, and sometimes I wonder if there will ever come a time when I do. For me, it is a very strange place to be. I've never been one to shut people out; I've never been afraid of being 'intimate.' Right now, I am. Ok, so this is very much Electra talking here, because I have a sense that Evangeline isn't afraid of much. So what the hell is Electra doing over here in this blog?!! Run back over to your own page Electra.

When the time is right, we will love. Both of us, and we will do it fully!

Who Am I? Part II--Beyond Batty

Today's 'pain' has become physical, which is interesting. My ring fingers on both hands ache terribly, and according to Louise Hay's book, this is indicative of grief and broken unions, and the affirmation is 'I am lovable.' Of course, Evangeline knows she is lovable, but even she doesn't get to escape the ravages of grief, mental or physical. I'm dealing with it.

I've been exploring more about bat symbolism. Bats are extremely aware of their surroundings and may be overly sensitive to the feelings of others. Electra has this quality but I don't think she's always been able to intuitively separate the feelings that are hers versus those of the other person. I'm hoping my 'bat-tuition' will help Evangeline do better in that regard as well as seeing through 'illusion.' Holy Reality, Bat Woman, that Fairy Tale nearly bit our butt off! Let's get in our butt-mobile and show Prince Charming what we're really made of!!!

So what AM I really made of? I was reading a blog today about the idea that we are not our 'stories,' and yet sometimes it's good to take those aspects of ourselves that we do like and use them to 'sculpt' our plot. I like that idea, and it got me thinking about what aspects of myself I'd like to keep while Evangeline is developing some new ones of her own. I do like being a sensitive person, but I don't want to be an idiot about it either. I think it's important to be careful about the kind of person I get close to, because those without a similar sensitivity will more than likely walk all over me every time they get the chance. I like being a creative person, and I wish I would give myself permission to excel at that. I'd like to realize that by allowing myself to be a channel for creativity, all my life's desires will be granted without my having to do one thing. Simply surrender to the outcome.

I'd like to believe that no matter what happens to me, I will always pick myself up and survive. My heart may be breaking, but I will walk through it to the other side, even when I know that side will never be the end of heartache. I'm working on this belief; it's a new one. I'd like to believe there really IS a soul mate for me, and he is out there somewhere, hoping he will find me too. Where we meet, joy will live.

I'm starting with these, and hopefully my list will grow. At the moment however, I have to go and prepare tea for a friend who lost her husband recently--to death, the finalizer. She is a cheerful upbeat older woman, and I am looking forward to being the recipient of her wisdom.

Who Am I--Maybe Just Batty

I'm torn today as to whether I should write on the 'mourning' blog or this one. I feel like I'm in deep mourning right now, but I'm also pleased that I've survived the weekend and today by staying active, working on the house, pulling myself back to the moment when I start to slip away. I honestly can't say what exactly the problem is, unless it has to do with the fact that 'he' is planning to move to be closer to 'her' soon, and there is sadness at yet another finalization of our relationship. And there is nothing I can do to stop what is happening; I just have to keep moving forward, as best I can, and some days my best is little more than a limp. At least I'm limping. (Ok, I'm really starting to sound like Electra here...)

Evangeline is beginning to move toward the idea of selling the house. I mean, really putting it on the market. In fact, a realtor friend will be here shortly. I'm not sure why, and probably I will wait till after Spring, so things won't be so busy with guests, but it feels like it is time for me to begin the process of letting it go. Maybe that is part of the heartache, too. (Ok, I am really starting to wonder why Electra isn't writing all this?!!)

Let's see if I can come up with a better story. I had a really cool experience last night. I was sitting at my desk working, and I heard some banging outside my window. I have resident bats in my shutters, and lately I've heard a lot of 'chipping' which I assume are babies, since I hear them in the daytime. But last night, when I heard the banging, I peeked behind the window shade, and the bats were in the process of launching! It was really exciting to see their wingspread and watch them flap into the dusky sky. I love my bats. Hmmm....I wonder what bats symbolize...I'll find out and be right back...Ok, this is amazing--rebirth, illusion, dreams, intuition, journeying, inner depth--my black hole! Follow this link for more!!

The irony is, I had just been telling my coach that I feel like I'm in a black hole and I can't find my way out. Yet according to the animal symbolism, although bats live in the 'dark,' they are very sensitive and have keen powers of intuition. Perhaps this is why I'm in the black hole, to develop my own power to see through 'illusion' as the bats can, so that I never again put myself in a situation like the one from which I've just emerged. Like the bat, I am waiting to be 'reborn.' And while I assumed my rebirth would come at daybreak, it will actually begin with the dark night.

Fascinating. Now THAT'S an Evangeline message!

The Worst Thing

I have a conversation with a friend yesterday and was bringing him up to date on some of the things that have happened in the past three months. He said something that no one else has said, except me. He said, 'Of all the things you've told me he's done, the worst is to have helped this woman make a film. After all the years you have worked on your writing and wanted to have a film produced, to do that with someone else, well, that's terrible.' Maybe it takes another artist to 'get' this, the idea of the person you love taking a lifetime dream and making it happen with another woman... That stabs to the core.

Then there's the other question: How do you do that to someone you love? Take their dream and share it with someone else? To my mind, the only answer to that one is, you don't. You don't love a person when all you can see is what you want; when you can't see how much they've given you, when you can't honor your commitment, when you away all that you promised. You don't love them, and I'm not sure you ever did. This is the cold hard reality that Electra doesn't want to face and Evangeline must. Evangeline means 'good news,' but to get to the good first I must face the bad. Looking at my most feared demon straight on is the hardest thing I've ever done. I suspect it may be the darkest road I'll ever walk. There may be a light at the end of it, but right now, it's so far away I can't see a glimmer.

As much as I don't want to, I have to hold to the truth that a person who truly knows how to love might put themselves at the top of the love list--as I hope Evangeline will learn to do this for herself--but they would never lie to protect themselves or anyone else. Lying isn't love. Lying to yourself or anyone else is not love. Betrayal isn't love. Breaking promises and commitments isn't love.

I want to believe that if I hold true to love--and I'm not saying I've always done this, because I haven't--but I'd like to believe that if I do, at the end of the day it will be worth it. That getting through the tough times together and coming out at the end with someone you've stood by through it all will be worth every single moment you felt you didn't love them. I was getting to that place, and it was wonderful. And now I have to let it go and find wonder in some new way. Electra doesn't think she can but Evangeline wants to believe she will.

Creating

I'm trying to find Evangeline again after a 'trying' few days. I feel I'm still on the emotional roller coaster and someone has disabled the 'off' switch so I just get to ride over and over and over. Roller coasters are great the first few times, but I've been on it WAY too long! I'm not having fun anymore.

But as I/Electra wrote on the 'mourning' blog, I've been reading a book that's given me some good things to think about, Laura Munson's, This is Not the Story You Think It Is. One of the things she did when she was going through the tough times, was to come up with a word to come back to in every moment of 'chaos.' My word for the year has been 'patience' which seems to help me in a general sense; but I think the word I need for the chaos is 'create.' I like the idea of turning to something--anything--creative when I start to do to the bad place. Today, for instance, I created 'space' in my house my cleaning the garage and getting rid of stuff. I created 'beauty' by rearranging the outdoor furniture and painting the chipped boards on the floor of the screened porch. I created a harmonious atmosphere for my guests. I created an opportunity to finish my Kouns' book by finding Nathan's poem and doing some Internet research. When you look at things this way, there are ALWAYS opportunities to create.

I can feel myself wanting to slip at every moment. I don't know if I'm making progress or just treading water. But I've gotten a lot done today, and that's what's important. There's nothing like a sense of accomplishment to make a person feel better. That's what Evangeline thinks, at least. And today, it's all about her. ;)

This is not the story...

I just got Laura Munson's new book, This is Not the Story You Think It is, in the mail today. I'd read her essay some time ago, and even wrote her a note recently to congratulate her about the book. She told me to never give up my writing. I'm trying...I wish I could believe I was writing myself out of my heartache, as she did, although her story does have a happy ending. I'm not really seeing my own at the moment. Sometimes it feels like my story only gets sadder, even though I am trying to let my 'alter ego' take more control of it.

It's been a tough couple of days; I'm not sure why. I simply get to this place. After reading the intro to Laura's book, and noting that she and I have MANY of the same books on our bedside tables, I can't help but wonder how one really DOES get to 'the end of suffering.' She says it happens in a blink, and I can believe that, but I haven't blinked it yet. Sometimes I wonder if I even want to really; perhaps I've gotten so used to suffering that it feels like a comforting blanket to me. Wouldn't it be cold without the blanket? As Evangeline, I've been exploring going barefoot in the kitchen; Electra, on the other hand, wears shoes and socks all the time, sometimes even in the heat of summer. No wonder she can't let go of the blanket.

How do you find happiness and an 'end to suffering' when you've lost the love of your life? Not 'might' lose him, but really really already lost him--to someone else. To someone he loves more, feels safer with, was willing to give up a fifteen year marriage to 'be' with, possibly even to marry. How is it possible not to want it back, not to suffer? I completely agree with Laura that it's the 'unattached' state that allows peace to be present, I just have no idea how to 'blink' that state into existence.

Unfortunately it feels like right now the only thing I can do is sit with the pain. The irony is, sometimes he sits with me. He doesn't have to do that, and I have to give him credit for taking the time. I'm sure ultimately it will help me forgive. But mostly it just makes me miss him all the more, and feel all the more lonely when he's gone, and want him back. And I'm not supposed to want... Yet maybe wanting is just part of the mourning journey. As much as I'd like it to be, the new day still hasn't dawned.

Does Writing Help...

I've started an 'alter ego' blog (see links) to help me step into a different way of seeing my life. Mostly I think it's working, but today I feel a slight set-back so I've stepped over to Electra's page. I can't explain it really; I think part of it is that I'm angry and I don't know how to express it. I want to control things I can't control, and have information I'm not supposed to want to have anymore. How does one just quit caring or wanting to know about the life of someone they loved deeply? How do you just turn that off? I haven't figured out how to do that...I think I want to, but sometimes I'm not really sure if I do or not.

I've really been working hard to 'see' the situation in a different light, that it IS difficult, that it's not my fault, that to some extent I am 'trapped' at the moment. I know it's what I do with the time of 'entrapment' that's important, but it is SO hard for me not to want to reach out to the 'other' I miss so much. I suppose it's true there becomes less and less to miss as time goes by, but I have moments, like this one, that I just want us to be able to talk. I think that's why I'm so angry--that we can't talk anymore, that even our friendship seems to have been destroyed. I keep trying to remember it's his guilt that's destroyed it, nothing I've done. The anger I've had needs no justification.

Someone was trying to tell me recently that all the lying was done only because 'he cared' about me, but there comes a point when it's time to stop, when if you really care you want to make some sort of amends. That time hasn't come and may never come. I see our lives diverging and not meeting again, and it breaks my heart. I don't know why it has to be that way. I'm here, trying my best to live this life, and it seems nothing I want matters and I must learn to detach from letting it matter. I want to detach. I do. I do. I do. But I am here and some days the pain is here too. And no one can fix or change that.

Shades of a Gray Morning

We had a storm last night and while it cooled the air a bit, the clouds linger. Perhaps Electra should be writing this post, but I'm determined to hold my gray mood at bay, and surely that's an Evangeline behavior!

Yesterday was an interesting day. I agreed to pose for a friend's figure drawing class at a local university...not nude but fully clothed! She wanted me to wear 'something fun' so I chose a sky blue Oriental jacket, a black hat with two white feathers, an obsidian pendant, and a Japanese fan. Although the 'sitting still' part wears on the back a bit after a while, one certainly has a lot of time to 'think.' After having my first experience with absenthe on Sunday, I felt like part of some avant garde community, posing as a model in art class, centered around the intent stares of blossoming artists, the smell of paint an invisible liquid in the air. Of course, the horse-riding on the outer lawn about halfway through the class drew me away from that image somewhat! (William Woods is an equestrian school, and there are always people on horses somewhere in the vicinity!) Still, the horses provided a nice distraction from rambling thoughts about 'appropriate anger.'

That's the latest 'task' I'm working on, and I have to say I'm struggling to find images of myself expressing anger appropriately, or even images of fictional women doing that. For instance, in FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, Kathy Bates smashes up the car of two younger women who steal her parking space. I don't think that's exactly appropriate anger, though most women would certainly cheer her on! During the course of my marriage, I think, for the most part, I expressed my anger appropriately. Maybe not always, but I don't think I held back from saying what was on my mind. But how can one ever know if their 'tone' is too strong, or how the other person may be internalizing the response? I realize that is about them, so perhaps once again it comes down to the choices we make regarding the people in our lives... I have one friend now, and she and I are able to have disagreements, and while they're never 'fun,' I'm mostly able to state my case and then let it go. I've never felt either of us held 'grudges,' and I think I used to do that a lot, where friends were concerned anyway. I think I've decided that I don't want people in my life who don't allow me to express myself authentically, be it in anger or otherwise. In some ways, that may limit the people I'm able to 'express' to, but maybe that's better in the long run...

I had ample opportunities for 'expression' yesterday evening as well. The local arts group hosted an 'After Hours' event. I went, knowing you-know-who was going to be there and deciding I should quit worrying about that and looking my best, go have a good time. Which I did. I even managed to get in a bit of 'flirtation,' which felt nice. Mostly I feel angry that he's even still in the picture around here, and hasn't gone off to be with his 'new love' SOMEWHERE ELSE! But at least I'm not 'hiding' anymore. Electra hid for too long, and for no good reason. Evangeline is determined to shine.

The Wrong Side of the Bed

I suppose it happens to all of us at one time or another, and since I'm only just 'meeting' my alter ego in Evangeline, my hope is that 'we' will deal with this 'wrong side of the bed' issue together. I keep telling myself I've dealt with the anger, risen above it, refused to carry it, made peace with it, etc. etc. But the truth of the matter is, all I've really done is turned it back on myself. Or maybe that's what 'Electra' has done and this new part of me truly wants to stop feeling everything is my fault. I'm starting to realize that some of core of me is truly furious, and she/I has no idea what to do with this feeling. Obviously it does no good whatsoever to turn the rage inward--or even outward for that matter. I just have to walk through it and hope joy is on the other side.

My coach reminded me yesterday that sometimes when a person lies to us for a long time, we begin to internalize those lies and believe they are true. But the fact of the matter is that another person's lies are just that--THEIR lies. For now, it's ok for me to stop looking for the 'truth' in this situation and simply accept that I was lied to, betrayed, and rejected by someone in whom I put absolute trust. Yes, that's what I put in him--ABSOLUTE TRUST. Perhaps it was misplaced or misguided or mistaken but that doesn't really matter. What matters is that I believed and trusted. And for the past two and a half years, I have been repeatedly lied to, even when I begged for truth. There is a cruel and unusual punishment in that kind of treatment that truly does leave one with symptoms of PTSD. I didn't do this to myself; Electra didn't do this to me; and Evangeline certainly didn't do it. It was done TO me.

Now, I'm here in the 'big house' trying to put together the broken pieces and start a new life while the old life still has its claws in my very being. This is not my fault either; this is where and how he left me. These are the facts, and at the moment, there is very little I can do to change them.

Electra has done her best not to live in a state of 'victimhood,' but has instead chosen sadness as her clock of choice. Evangeline wants to choose anger, I think, but as the adult here, I'm willing to indulge that emotion for a time, but 'we're' not going to live in it. For now, it's enough for her/me to know it's perfectly fine to be angry, indignant, and justified in hating the actions of those who have hurt me. It is perfectly ok to stand firm in the belief that I did NOT deserve such treatment, and that I am a priceless treasure another person mistook for a piece of junk. There's no need for me to believe someone else's skewed vision. I know what's in my heart, and my soul, and my spirit. It's all good. Love starts here.

Waking Up...

If mourning becomes Electra, what becomes Evangeline? Ironically, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem of this name is about a girl searching for her lost love during the time of Great Upheaval. In history, that would have been the forced population transfer between 1755 and 1763 of the French Acadian population from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (known as Acadie to the French) to other British-controlled colonies. In my own life, this time of Great Upheaval has forced me to search for a deeper kind of love--a love of self. Until this upheaval, I never really knew my self was lost. It's become increasingly apparent to me that it was...

If I went back to the very beginning, what kind of girl would I meet there? From what I can tell, she laughed--a lot. She laughed and she loved in equal measure. She loved pretty things; she still does. She loved to be loved; she still does. She always had a song in her heart; she still does. She was loyal and true; she still is.

But like a princess in a fairy tale, she has been enchanted. It is time for her to wake up. It is time for her to reclaim the pieces she left behind, the ones who made her who she is but have long-since been locked away and forgotten. Deep in the treasure chest of her heart, the jewels of her true self wait to be re-discovered. Who will she be when she finds them again?

I suspect...she will be the heroine of her own story.

Easter

I was reading online about the real meaning of Easter, and discovered a site that traced its original pagan traditions. At the end of the site, I was surprised to find it signed, 'Jesus, April 13, 2001.' So in essence, I guess I happened upon a sermon from Jesus today!

It's fascinating to learn how Christianity adopted so many of the pagan dates and ceremonies as a way to draw in those who refused to give up their beliefs. I never realized that the term 'pagan' actually came from the word 'paganus,' meaning one who lives in the country. So pagans were familiar with the cycles of nature that made life everlasting. They didn't fear life and death as many Judeo-Christians did, but saw them simply as stages of growth. Instead of needing to be 'saved' from life, pagans loved the world and lived with honor and respect in order to create a better world.

I believe the only thing we really have for sure is this moment. If Easter (so named for a pagan Goddess, by the way!) is about hope, transformation, and resurrection, these things are still only present to us in each moment. If we see living as something to be done for some future reward, I think we are missing the point of life itself. Life IS the gift, but perhaps when we chose to incarnate, we didn't realize exactly what that would mean... We run as fast as we can from the difficult parts, not really understanding that it took the 'dark night' for Jesus to find his own rebirth.

The hardest part, I think, is accepting the 'dark night' as simply another part of the journey. Perhaps it is one of the missing pieces, and until you find that one, true transformation will never be possible. I suppose this is what I'm coming to understand.

Freedom...

My coach suggested I try writing an 'antithesis' to my previous entry about the deer. She gave me some questions to ponder, but I'm not sure I know how to answer any of them... For example--what does true freedom look like for me? Am I ready to move toward its gate? What steps might help me do that?

I have been 'playing' with my 'core values' images, journaling, exploring, reading, and I have to say I still have no real clue what life is calling me to do. If I go back to the metaphor of the trapped deer, I would have to say that most important, probably, is the healing. Thinking of it now, I can feel the fear and anxiety they felt, the sense of wanting to find a way out, to escape, but not being able to 'see' any kind of exit. My heart still aches for the small one who cut its mouth trying to break free, and I can only hope that wound heals with time. But time is the key to any healing, I think, and I am still healing from my own wounds. I am still trying to accept the fact that I can't 'talk' my way to happiness, that perhaps ultimately, it's my 'words' (my mouth) that have caused the most harm to myself and others. Part of my healing process must be to forgive myself for that.

But once the deer were free, they simply disappeared, and perhaps 'disappearing' has always been another issue for me. If I go through the gate, will I too disappear? What is out there? What happens if I 'step off the cliff'? What does 'freedom' look like?

I have to believe that first and foremost, there is peace in being free. There must be a sense of deep satisfaction in knowing the walls are gone, and the way is clear. There must be contentment and meaning. But each deer had to find its own way out of entrapment. The first deer, once pointed in the right direction, seemed to go easily. The other two didn't find the path so quickly. It reminds me of the scene of a recent LOST episode, when Jacob told Hurley, "You can put some people in a cab and tell them where to go and they go. Others have to sit and stare at the ocean for a while."

Perhaps that's what I'm doing--I know the gate is there, but I'm still waiting, staring, trying to piece together what might be on the other side. I don't think there's anything wrong with staring at the gate, but staring isn't going to get me anywhere in the long run--and I'm never going to know what's on the other side till walk I through it.

The only thing I know for sure at the moment is that my life here at the B&B is the kind of life I want. Yes, it has missing pieces. But the gate is open. I am willing to walk into freedom, even if freedom simply means peace of mind. I am willing to be guided by that part of me that knows the direction my soul wants to go. Perhaps, somewhere along the way, I will find what I've lost--or something better.

Trapped...

Yesterday I was sitting on the screened-in back porch, eating lunch and thinking about nothing in particularly, and I looked up to see 3 DEER in my neighbor's yard! It's a big open yard, but this is, after all, TOWN, so at first I thought I must be losing my mind. (Not a far stretch...) Anyway, then I realized they were trapped, running around in circles, trying to find their way out. They couldn't seem to 'see' that the driveway was open with no gate, so they kept going back to the same corners of the yard, and finding themselves right back where they started. It was heartbreaking!

I called a neighbor on the other side and asked him to come and help me run them out of the yard. He did, and we managed finally to 'point' them in the right direction, and all three headed down the drive and across my front yard. One disappeared down the street somewhere, but the other two, unfortunately, went straight to my back yard. My friend and I ran around there, only to find the two of them trapped in a small wooden fenced-in area, trying to jump a fence that was much too high for them. He managed to open the gate and one ran out into the yard, and the other--poor thing had a bleeding mouth from banging it against the fence--headed down the drive. My friend chased Deer #3 across the yard and it jumped my pickett fence and was gone. I never could figure out where the three of them went--they just vanished at that point, but I hope they found their way OUT of town!

So, what an amazing metaphor for my life! Did the three of them show up to teach me a lesson? I'm sure they did--I do wonder why it took three instead of just one. Perhaps just to show me the craziness, maybe the 'pack' mentality. The first deer, upon escaping the yard, learned its lesson and ran back--hopefully--to safer ground. The second two just got themselves into a 'tighter' situation, and one them ended up really getting hurt. Hasn't that been the story of my life? Well, there's the 3--three marriages--running around and around and doing the same thing over and over again. Breaking free from the really bad one in the beginning, only to find myself going back to the same kind of man, putting myself in a world with no room for growth and no way out, beating my head against the wall trying to get free. Only hurting myself.

In the end, they all broke free. Isn't it time for me to do the same? To realize I'm a free spirit, and I don't belong in a place where I can't grow. If I can grow at the B&B, that's wonderful, and maybe I can, but I certainly wasn't growing in ANY of my previous relationships. It's time for me to claim my power and GROW. Now, where to begin?

On the Radio...

Tonight I'm going to be on an Australian online radio show talking about 'narcissistic relationships.' Should be interesting! I've never been on a radio show before!! I hope I don't say anything to embarrass myself! ;)

Today was a beautiful Spring day here, and I got lots accomplished...including having to deal with 'him' coming down to do some 'maintenance' chores. I handled it well, stayed detached, didn't talk about anything personal, but I have to admit, it is hard. I try to remind myself about all the things I've read, and to know that even then there are things I may never completely understand, but it is hard when all I can truly remember is the life and the person I loved. I keep wondering where all that went? All I know is that it seems to be completely gone now. And I am here, trying to rebuild my life...

Last night it was fun to have the 'ghost hunting' dinner at the house. I think everyone enjoyed it, though no ghosts 'appeared' to be in attendance. They did have some interesting 'sounds' on the tapes we made in February. I can't wait to listen to them with headphones and see what they might actually be saying...one really sounded like a baby crying... In truth, I don't believe there are really 'ghosts' here, but more than energy patterns from the past are somehow imprinted on the house. Goodness knows there were plenty of babies born here!

At any rate, I'll keep this short as I want to have some quiet time before the 'interview.'

Waiting...

I'm waiting for my last guest to check out so that I can get ready for my next set of guests. Tonight is my 'Dinner and a Haunt.' Last month I had a paranormal research team out to survey the house for 'ghosts;' tonight they return and will reveal their findings to students from a local continuing ed program. Should be interesting--I've heard they found 'something' but I don't know what yet. Can't wait to find out!

I'm hoping to work some of this into my script--the script I'm writing about my experiences here, which will include ghosts. They may not be manifesting like they will in the script, but the spirits are definitely 'here,' I think. I'm not sure if they're actually protecting me, or if the women of this house just don't like men! Men certainly don't seem to stay around, that's for sure.

Keeping busy has been good. I worked hard yesterday not to fall into a 'bad' place and I feel like I'm doing better today. I woke up this morning from an interesting dream, and the last thing I recalled was that I was moving to a new house on a big piece of land. My 'ex's' old house was on the property, and there was a swing that I planned to move to my new house. He, or someone, asked me why didn't I just leave it and that way I could sit in the back yard and watch the traffic go by on the freeway? I answered, 'why would I want to sit and watch traffic when I can sit and watch the ocean?' This has stayed with me. Why would I want to look at something so mundane as traffic when I could stare out at the vastness of the sea? Why would I want limits when I can have it all? Why would I want to go back to that dry desert place where he lived, when just around the bend is life with an ocean view? I felt so encouraged by this revelation that I don't even feel so lonely anymore.

So now it's just a matter of waiting. Patiently.

So Alone...

I know that in a spiritual sense I am never really alone, and I know how to be 'alone' when I am...most of the time. For the past couple of days though, I've felt so isolated from the 'real world'--from things to do, people to hang out with, new places to see. Or perhaps it's not that at all--perhaps it's just coming back to this big empty house. Perhaps it's that I still miss my friend, even though I know my friend isn't my friend anymore. How do I get that through my head? Especially when he still lives up the street and we still have to deal with the house together--but we can't do it as friends--we can only talk when we have 'business' to deal with. And while I know he's done some terrible things where I am concerned, I just don't operate from a place of anger. There are so many times when, truthfully, I just want to know what is going on in his life. Maybe it isn't any of my business anymore, but it was my business for nearly 15 years, and how does one just erase all that? He seems to have done it, but I'm not finding it so easy.

The 'narcissist' material says they only see the 'other' as an 'object.' So when they cast you aside, it's like trading in an old car--you wouldn't want to stay 'connected' to it, now would you? He is getting all his 'supply' from others now, and according to what I've read, he only sees someone would who still care about him as 'pathetic.' Sometimes I fall into a trap of seeing myself that way, and then I remember there is absolutely nothing wrong with loving and trusting someone, and when they don't turn out to be who you thought they were, it's bound to take some time to work through the grief. That's all I'm doing, working through the grief...

In the meantime, I am trying to stay focused on the work in front of me. I'm trying to move ahead with selling the B&B, but at the same time I'm putting up new packages to try and bring in different kinds of business. I put up a Divorce Recovery Retreat and I'll be interested to see if that pans out at all. Nothing else has turned up on the 'work' horizon, so I might as well try to drum up some extra income here. I'm just trying to be open to whatever the Universe might bring. But at the same time, I'm trying to move forward. I'm not supposed to say it is hard, but today it feels hard. Maybe what I need to say is that while it IS hard, I know I am up to the challenge, and I plan to keep putting every effort into the journey, no matter how hard it may feel at times. Yes, that's a better way to say it. Like it or not, it appears being alone is part of the path.

Nothing is Better

I had the weirdest thought while I was at the Y working out today. I suppose it ties in with the struggle I've been going through in dealing with the 'unreality' of my relationship; the idea that what I believed to be real all these years may never have been real at all. But what occurred to me was that if it wasn't real, and having something I believed to be pretty much everything I wanted isn't possible, then honestly I would rather have nothing. On some levels that might seem pretty sad and negative, but it didn't really strike me as so at the time.

For the past couple of days I have been so lonely and missing him so much that I finally broke down and popped in to 'band practice' last night. It's an open situation where people drop by all the time to hear the 'boys' jam, so the only weird thing about my doing it was that it was me, and everyone pretty much knows now what he's done to me. I could see in the reaction of one of the guys that he wondered if I was going to cause a freak-out scene. I think seeing that in his face actually calmed me down...not that I was worked up or anything. Part of the reason I went was to see if one of the guys who'd recently 'taken up for me' was there. I wanted to tell him thank you, because it's probably the first time I've heard of someone actually doing that--telling the 'ex' that the way he did what he did was just plain wrong. That's the real crux of it--the way he did it, and the lying. Anything would have been better, especially from someone you thought was your best friend.

Anyway, he didn't even see me till they finished one song, and by that time I was able to wave and smile and just 'be cool.' After the next song--one he used to sing for me at karaoke--they took a break and we chit-chatted for a bit, but not about anything important. Then I left because I had guests coming in. He walked me to the door, gave me a hug, and that was that. I was glad I went...

I was able to 'be there' and know that I still feel what I feel but it doesn't change anything. I'm still alone; he's still who he is; he's still with someone else. I still miss the things about him I miss, but no amount of missing is going to bring any of that back. I was proud of myself that I didn't cry or rage or do one thing to make him feel guilty--at least I don't think I did, and he didn't seem to mind that I'd shown up. There just aren't that many places to 'get out and be with people' around this little town. Especially people that are involved in music, and I miss that so much.

But at the end of it all, at the moment, I would rather be alone with myself than with anyone who's not him--in the 'man' department at least. I am okay with that. I am lonely sometimes, but I am okay. It's a strong place to be.

Once Upon a Time...

...there was a loving and compassion Queen who had been bewitched and enslaved inside a Fairy Tale. Everyone had always told the Queen there was nothing more wonderful that being the star of your own story, and of course that story would include a handsome Prince Charming who would take care of all life's mundane details, the ones the Queen wasn't smart enough to deal with on a daily basis.

Once the Queen met her Prince Charming she set about living her very own Fairy Tale life. She lived it for many years, sharing her abundant love with the Prince, who lavished her with sparkling jewels, love, and riches beyond belief. At first the Queen first somewhat stifled by her life with the Prince, as if her light was slowly being snuffed out by some malevolent force. But little by little she overcame her fears and melded her life to his, delighted beyond belief that they shared the same 'everything.' How could she have been so lucky to find someone so much like her, someone whose only desire in life was to make her every dream come true?! Life in the Fairy Tale was good indeed.

Then suddenly, Prince Charming started acting very strange. Instead of being filled with love and generosity toward the Queen, he began to snap and get angry for the silliest reasons. He began to leave the castle more and more and stay gone longer and longer. The Queen felt baffled by his behavior, but not particularly concerned because after all, he was her Prince Charming and this was a Fairy Tale. Everyone knows Fairy Tales only have one kind of ending. So she simply went about her life, trying to treat him with extra love and compassion in the hope that soon he would feel better about whatever was troubling him.

But one day, quite unexpectedly, Prince Charming went out hunting and never returned. The Queen tried asking all his friends, but no one knew where or why he had gone. All at once the Queen found herself sunk into a pit of despair so deep that she couldn't leave the castle. She was more alone than she'd ever been in her life, for truly, the only person who really knew or loved her had been Prince Charming. She tried to leave and make new friends, but everyone ran away from her, because she was the Queen, and she had head-chopping power. No one knew what a loving, compassion person she truly was, for she had never ventured far enough into the world to show them. She told herself that now she must try or else be forever trapped in an empty castle with no Prince Charming--in truth, with no one at all.

So the Queen opened the castle as a guest house. She took in people from far and wide; she cooked and waited on them; she showered each individual with the full measure of her love and compassion. All the while she prayed that someday the Prince would return and love her again. She knew now she was perfectly capable of handling the details of her daily routine--which meant running a large castle and seeing to its visitors--but she still wanted to share her life with the person who knew her better than anyone. She wanted to understand what she had done to drive him away from her.

The Queen didn't realize it wasn't anything she had done at all. She had been bewitched during her youth by an evil sorcerer who wanted all women to believe they needed men to take care of them, to make them feel 'whole.' As she began to give her gifts to others, day by day the spell lifted, until finally the Queen could feel her true glory.

But the Queen would not be truly released from falling back into her spell, until she knew and accepted the Truth about the Prince. It had been living there in her heart all along, but she had chosen to ignore it, wanting to believe in the Fairy Tale more than anything in the World. The Prince was little more than a mirror, and when the Queen looked at him, the only thing he had to reflect back were images of her Self. When the news finally came that he was living in another Kingdom, with another Queen, whom everyone said he loved beyond anything they had ever seen, the Queen knew the Truth at last. She was freed from the Fairy Tale and cast into Real Life.

She had always been told that Real Life wasn't a place you ever wanted to be. But once she got there, she discovered that truly, it is the only place you ever can be. The Queen didn't know what the future might have in store for her, but she knew that whatever came, it would be Real. And after spending most of her life in a Fairy Tale, Real seemed like it might be worth checking out. Maybe she would never find another Prince Charming, but at the end of the day, at least she would know she had found her Self.

PS--And while she didn't always live 'happily' in Real Life, she did Really Live.

Narcissistic Men

I was listening to a very interesting radio program today with a woman named Lisa Scott who just wrote a book called, It's All About Him. It was fascinating and illuminating. I've been told several times that my 'ex' was probably a narcissist, but I always find it difficult to believe because in some ways he doesn't fit what I would have thought was the 'profile.' Yet listening to this program, I found so many similarities it was frightening. The idea that he always needs attention and validation; that he could not stand any kind of criticism; that he would go outside the relationship to feed his addiction but always came back because he needs the secondary validation only a relationship can give; that in the end he began to seek ways to 'escape' from the relationship; that something always seemed 'off' but I could never figure out what exactly. Every single one of these things was absolutely true in my relationship.

And yet, I so don't want to believe it. I don't want to accept the fact that he could not and can not feel empathy. That he doesn't really know how to love. That the illusion was never ever real. The reality of all that hits SO very hard. And no matter what I thought on believed, I never would have suspected it was a personality disorder. Perhaps I thought he was just not a person with a strong character; that he was immature; etc etc. But this, this is beyond anything I ever would have suspected. How does one reconcile such a truth? How does one move on and learn to trust again?

Right now, I can see it, acknowledge it, accept it, but I feel very very alone. I feel like I'm in the middle of a play that most people can't really understand. I feel for him; I feel for the next woman he loves; for those of us he loved and left in the past--not just women but family members as well. I tend to be a person who digs deep for answers, but I am in the minority. Most people wouldn't believe this if I told them. So I carry the knowledge in my heart and hope it will make me a stronger person. For him, I hold little hope, and that too makes me so very sad.

In the meantime, I will go on as best I can. I have a busy weekend, although I know in many ways it will also be a lonely one. I feel a lot of loneliness these days, and yet I keep putting one foot in front of the other. It's the only thing one can do...grieve and go forward. Sad, but imperative.

Betrayed or Betrayer

Last night I was reading Sarah Ban Breathnach's book, Something More, and was taken by the idea that humans can hurt, fail, and disappoint me, but the only person who can ever truly betray me is me. This is an interesting thought, because I have certainly felt 'betrayed' over the past couple of years. And yet, when I look at how much of myself I gave up to hold this relationship intact, I have to admit the real betrayer is me. I somehow lost, left, refused to love myself best. I refused to believe in myself first and foremost; I looked to someone else to do that. Unfortunately, the person I was looking to didn't even know how to love himself. How on earth could he ever really love me? Yet in the end, when he couldn't, I even blamed myself for that. Talk about betrayal.

My divorce recovery coach asked me to list and describe three ways in which I've been accepted and appreciated in a relationship, as a friend, or as a creative person. I'm having to dig deep to find these--and what I recognize is that the reason for that is because I often betray myself in the choices I make...in relationships, friendships, and my creativity. I haven't allowed myself to be accepted and appreciated. My tendency is to ask 'why' rather than 'what can I do to change this in my life?'

But rather than betray myself in my needing to know 'why,' I think I'll just accept my curiosity in seeking answers and try to let go of the 'need' to have them. If they come, that's great, but if they don't, staying stuck trying to find them isn't going to do anything except cause suffering. (This is my new 'Buddist' awareness.) ;)

So all this is a round about way of saying I think I do know 'why.' I was never more loved, accepted and appreciated than as a small child, when my grandparents took care of me while my parents worked. For 3 years I had the unconditional love and admiration that only grandparents can give. Looking at old photos, I can see it in my smile, the joy in my face reflected in theirs. Then it all changed because my mother got pregnant and stopped working to take care of my and the new baby. My young mother, who didn't have the same kind of time for me as my devoted grandparents, who did the best she could but still left me feeling lonely and unloved as only an' abandoned' child can. So perhaps I learned that kind of acceptance and admiration just can't be trusted. Recently, with the loss of my marriage, I have learned that lesson again--and throughout my life, I re-learned it over and over until there just hasn't been any room to see it any other way. Failed relationships, abandoning friends, and frustrated creativity. I must have built a wall so formidable that no amount of acceptance and admiration would even dare to try to get in, and the memories of any that did are oh, so dim.

But the memories I feel most strongly now are more near than far. I feel accepted and appreciated by the guests who come to the B&B. I feel happy when people come into the house, when they praise my hospitality, my cooking, my creativity, my home. I feel lightened by the light they bring with them. I feel accepted and appreciated by the friends and family who have held my hand for the past 2 years; who have listened while I cried and raged; who've told me I deserved more and better and it would all be waiting for me on the other side. I feel happier when I'm talking to them, or laughing with them, or planning for the future with them.

As much as I don't want to remember though, the most acceptance and appreciation I ever felt--beyond my grandparents--was from my husband. If I was betraying or lying to myself about this, maybe it's because I wanted/needed to believe it so badly. I do know that if his love, acceptance, and appreciation had been 'real,' it wouldn't have just disappeared, almost overnight. For any part I played in destroying it, for that I will always feel the utmost regret. But perhaps what I saw was merely a projection of the way I felt about him. Perhaps I gave him all the acceptance and appreciation--the love--I should have been giving myself all this time. Perhaps now, somehow, I will find a way to turn those things inward; to become, as SBB writes, a woman who can say, 'Do I deserve to be happy?' 'Damn right I do!"

Me and My House

So it seems I'm going to be staying with the house for the time being. The minute I found out 'the truth,' all I wanted was to run as far and as fast from this place as I could. Amazingly, the perfect job appeared out of nowhere, but another irony, I still haven't heard a word back about it. I don't think they've hired anyone, but right now, no one seems to be hiring me either. Ultimately I had to make a choice: Take the upfront money (not even half the equity) he was offering and 'hope' for the rest later, or stay and see the sell through myself. As much as I love the house, the choice may have seemed like a no-brainer, but staying here hasn't been easy--and now, most days, it's even harder than before. I try not to let my mind go to the 'bad places' but invariably it finds its way back to them. I wonder when that will change; I wonder when he will be little more than a distant memory to me. I wonder if that time will ever come.

For now anyway, I am trying to take the needed steps to rebuild my life. I have been working by phone with a divorce recovery coach, which seems like it's helping somewhat. I've had to work hard to overcome my 'don't spend the money' voice, but I'm trying to give myself permission to do something positive that's just for me. She gives me exercises and is helping me learn to see through 'a different lens.' I think the main thing is just having someone objective 'in my corner.' Someone who checks in on the follow-through and helps me stay as positive as I can. (Which isn't always a lot, but I'm working on shifting this mentality.)

So, I will keep this one short as I'm waiting for her call now, and then I'm off to Columbia for my mediation class tonight. That's helping, too. A lot. Staying present isn't always easy or fun, but it's the only real place to be.

The Next Stage of the Journey

Less than 2 weeks after I made my last post, my world came apart--again. Just as I thought perhaps I was starting to put the pieces back into some sort of cohesive whole, the horrible truth came out at last. I understand so much more now, but the understanding is not pleasant. Still, it's real. Finally, I am realizing that no amount of crying or screaming is going to change it. I read something recently that puts it in simple terms--you can yell at a cat all day long, but it still isn't going to bark.

I won't go into all the sad and terrible details, but for some reason, just about the time I was supposed to go out of town for my niece's wedding and leave the B&B with 'him' again, I found myself hit once more with all the 'secrets' he seemed to be keeping. So I ask the question again: Is there someone else? It turned out that this time he said 'yes,' and it turns out it is someone who used to be 'our' friend, and it also turns out it had started before he ever left--which now explains a lot of the weird and angry behavior. WOW! As if that wasn't enough--and he did admit it all but only after I pieced everything together--ironically, that was pretty easy to do once I knew the 'who'--but after all that, when I asked it is was serious or marriage was on the horizon, he lied even about that. I later found out from a friend that he had already given her a very expensive engagement ring! That, and the part about the film, hurt me as much as all the lying.

The part about the film is this--he had worked with her on a short film about a local event that happened in town 3 years ago--he did the poster for it--just as he always did posters for my scripts, they had a screening (on a date I was out of town!!)--and he even got producer credit on IMDB!! I feel like he's taken every single one of my dreams and is now living them out with her. It has been a heart-wrenching 2 months. The lies, the betrayal--for 2 years he's been gone in a much more 'real' way than I ever knew. While I've sat here, for the most part, still loving him and wishing he would get through his 'crisis' and come back.

Why do men do this to us? How could a woman I knew do this to me? Doesn't either one of them realize the pain and destruction they have caused? Yet when I look back, I can see now that this is what he did to his previous wife. He told the story of 'how unhappy he was' with her, and we all bought it, and I bought into his love for me. But of course the minute he realized I wanted REAL love and intimacy, he immediately began to pull away. And maybe I did ignore that, and the instinct I had that he was 'messed up.' Maybe my lack of hubris caused me to believe you can love someone into wellness. Now I know you can't.

I wish I wasn't such a 'need to know' person, but I am. I probably know much, much more than I actually 'need to know.' I'm not sure anymore if knowing makes it better or worse. But what I know is this--something is missing in 'him.' Some vital element of character or morality or something that would keep a person from walking away, would keep them from being happy with what they have. He can say all day he was never happy, but I have the cards and the letters and the memories to prove that more often than not, he was. I have the happy times I had, and I wouldn't be feeling such a deep well of grief if I hadn't truly believed he was my life partner and best friend forever. I'm stunned to know he didn't feel the same way.

But now I have the hard work of truly letting go. I will write more about this in another entry, as this one is getting quite long. I will also write about my uncertain future and the house. I will tell you how I am trying to overcome the pain. Nothing really works completely, but it all works a little. Right now, maybe that's the best I can hope for.
